Lady Gaga Review

Lady Gaga

I remember listening to “Just Dance” on the radio and thinking, “This is just some mediocre dance song. The lyrics are so basic. This is nothing unique.” Little did I know how unique Lady Gaga really was.

Lady Gaga – Just Dance

I think I really started liking Gaga around the time of “Poker Face” and “Paparazzi”. Her odd (yet stylish) fashion and her shockingly strange videos, made me do a 180 degree turn on my opinion of her. It doesn’t appear too gimmicky to me at all – more artistic.

Lady Gaga – Poker Face

Lady Gaga – Paparazzi

What surprises me is that she really does have a pretty good singing voice, but her songs don’t always lend themselves to allowing her to show what she can really do with her vocals. I suggest watching her unplugged or actually going to one of her concerts.

I went to one of her Monster Ball concerts in San Francisco, CA. After that, there is no doubt in my mind that Lady Gaga is, currently, one of the greatest performers out there. That was one of the best concerts I have ever been to and I have been to a lot. The deviancy, the showmanship, the props, the timing, and her ability to demand attention – like a perfectly planned orchestration.

I could see where people would feel she is the Madonna of our time, but is she just stealing ideas or does she really have an imagery all her own? For instance, Bette Midler believes Lady Gaga stole her mermaid idea (per a Rolling Stone article). In my personal opinion, with respect to Gaga, I still believe she is very unique. If she is copying a similar Madonna vibe, we could also say, that only adds more to her genius. She has clearly carved out her own little niche or found one that hasn’t been penetrated enough recently. While we are on the subject of copying, I noticed artists (like Rihanna and Katy Perry) started wearing attire and producing videos that were stranger and weirder, since Gaga hit the top of the charts. Whatever Gaga is doing, it is obviously working. It is very hard to get that many singles, off of one album, to be in the top ten in such a short period of time.

Lady Gaga – You and I

Lady Gaga – Edge of Glory

The sax coming in, in Gaga’s single “Edge of Glory”, is pure genius. Mixing of different instrumentation and musical elements adds a sense of musicality to a piece. It definitely is my favorite part of the song.

Please let me know your thoughts on Lady Gaga.
